LAGOS, NIGERIA — Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries in a car crash in Nigeria that left two of his close associates dead, authorities and his promoters confirmed.

The accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State around 11 a.m. local time when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua collided with another vehicle. Local police said the incident is under investigation.

Joshua, 36, was left with “minor bruises” but was taken to a hospital for observation. His promoter Matchroom Boxing confirmed the fatalities, identifying the victims as Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, both foreign nationals and members of Joshua’s team.

“Anthony Joshua was involved in a road traffic accident in Lagos, Nigeria, earlier today. With profound sadness it has been confirmed that two close friends of Anthony, Sina and Latif, tragically died in the crash,” Matchroom said in a statement.

Videos circulating online showed Joshua walking away from the wreckage with assistance from emergency responders. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that the SUV collided with a stationary commercial truck, causing fatal injuries to the passengers.

Joshua had recently fought and defeated Jake Paul in Miami earlier this month. Paul posted on social media after the crash: “Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”

Authorities in Ogun State assured that Joshua is in stable condition, while investigations continue into the cause of the collision. The tragedy has drawn widespread sympathy from fans and the boxing community, with tributes pouring in for the two men who lost their lives.
