Over 400 gas stations close nationwide as fuel prices surge

MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) confirmed that 403 gas stations across the country have shut down amid rising fuel prices, a sharp increase from 273 closures reported just last week. Authorities are investigating whether hoarding or profiteering is behind the closures, in coordination with the Department of Energy (DOE).

PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño announced on March 23, 2026, that the closures were recorded from the 14,313 gas stations monitored nationwide. He explained that the sudden spike in shutdowns coincided with sustained fuel price hikes that have pressured independent and smaller fuel retailers.

The DOE and PNP are now conducting joint inspections to determine if the closures are legitimate business decisions or part of attempts to manipulate supply and prices. “Mula po siya sa 273 noong Miyerkules at umabot na nga po siya sa 403,” Tuaño said, noting the rapid escalation in the number of affected stations.

Despite the closures, authorities assured the public that the country’s fuel supply remains stable and is projected to last until mid-April. However, the DOE warned that continued price increases could further strain smaller retailers, potentially leading to more shutdowns if market conditions do not improve.

The closures have raised concerns about accessibility, especially in rural areas where independent gas stations are often the primary source of fuel. Motorists in these regions may face longer travel times to reach operational stations, adding to the burden of already high fuel costs.

The PNP emphasized that its monitoring efforts are part of a broader campaign to ensure consumer protection and prevent exploitative practices during periods of economic strain. The agency vowed to continue working closely with the DOE to safeguard the public against unfair trade practices and ensure that fuel remains available across the country.

This development underscores the impact of global oil price volatility on local markets, with the Philippines facing both supply chain challenges and domestic regulatory concerns. As investigations continue, the government is expected to release further updates on measures to stabilize fuel distribution and protect consumers from potential abuses.
