MAYNILA, Pilipinas — Itinalaga si Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Undersecretary for Special Concerns Paul Joseph V. Mercado bilang officer-in-charge (OIC) ng ahensya, ayon sa anunsyo ng Malacañang ngayong Lunes. Ang kanyang pagtatalaga ay kasunod ng pagbibitiw ni DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy.

Kinumpirma ni Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro ang balita sa mga mamamahayag sa pamamagitan ng Viber message. “Department of Information and Communications Technology Undersecretary for Special Concerns Paul Mercado has been assigned officer-in-charge of the agency,” ani Castro.

Hindi pa ibinunyag ang dahilan ng pagbibitiw ni Uy. “There is no information yet on the reason for his resignation,” dagdag pa niya.

Habang naghahanap si Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. ng permanenteng kalihim, si Mercado muna ang mamumuno sa DICT.

Matagal nang aktibong kinatawan ng Pilipinas si Mercado sa iba’t ibang internasyonal na pagpupulong. Pinangunahan niya kamakailan ang Philippine delegation sa 5th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Digital Senior Officials’ Meeting sa Bangkok, Thailand noong Enero.

Sa kanyang pahayag, tiniyak ni Mercado na ipagpapatuloy niya ang mga proyekto ng DICT. “I am honored to be entrusted with this responsibility and will ensure that the DICT continues to fulfill its mandate of improving the country’s information and communications technology infrastructure,” aniya.

Kabilang sa mga itinuturing na prayoridad ng DICT ang pagpapatuloy ng National Broadband Plan at Free Wi-Fi for All Program, na layong mapabuti ang digital connectivity sa buong bansa.

Nilinaw rin ni Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro na patuloy pa rin ang pagbusisi ng Pangulo sa mga posibleng kandidatong mamumuno sa DICT. “The President is carefully considering candidates for the position to ensure that the DICT will be led by someone who can continue the progress made under Secretary Uy’s leadership,” ani Castro.

Dumating ang pagtatalaga kay Mercado sa panahong hinaharap ng DICT ang maraming hamon sa sektor ng ICT, kabilang ang pagpapabuti ng internet connectivity at cybersecurity.

Bagaman wala pang opisyal na pahayag ang DICT hinggil sa transisyon, ilang opisyal ng ahensya ang nagpahayag ng kumpiyansa sa pamumuno ni Mercado. “We are confident that Undersecretary Mercado will lead the DICT effectively during this transition period,” ayon sa isang senior DICT official.
