MAUI, Hawaii — Pansamantalang dinetina ng U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ang isang dosenang gurong Pilipino sa isang raid sa isla ng Maui, ayon sa mga opisyal.

Ayon kay Consul General Arman Talbo ng Pilipinas sa Honolulu, ang mga guro ay may hawak na J-1 non-immigrant visa at nagtuturo sa iba’t ibang paaralan sa Maui. Dumaan sila sa beripikasyon pero hindi sila inaresto ng mga awtoridad.

"The Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu has reached out to the Filipino teachers in Maui who were affected by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation. The teachers informed the Consulate that none of them had been arrested and that they are safe and in good condition," ani Talbo.

Kinumpirma rin ng Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) na ligtas ang lahat ng guro at naresolba ang sitwasyon sa mismong lugar ng insidente.

"The Department is aware of an incident involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a private residence housing several of our international teachers on Maui. All of the teachers are safe and accounted for, and we understand the situation was resolved on site with no arrests made," pahayag ng HIDOE.

Isinagawa ang raid batay sa search warrant na inaprubahan ng isang federal judge kaugnay ng imbestigasyon sa immigration. Ayon sa U.S. Department of Homeland Security, ang mga guro ay isinailalim sa legal na awtoridad ng ICE at dumaan sa beripikasyong pang-imigrasyon.

Umani ng batikos ang operasyon mula sa mga mambabatas at education officials. Tinawag ni Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz na “outrageous” ang raid at inakusahan ang ICE ng racial profiling.

"The reported interrogation and efforts to detain Filipino teachers in their home on Maui by ICE agents is outrageous. This is racial profiling and a shameful abuse of power. We are a nation of laws, but the broad ICE raids this week are clearly designed just to instill fear," ani Schatz.

Nagpahayag din ng pagkabahala ang Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA).

"The HSTA is very disturbed and concerned about how these Maui teachers were treated," ani Osa Tui, Jr., presidente ng HSTA.

Mahigit 100 gurong Pilipino ang kasalukuyang nagtuturo sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng Hawaii sa ilalim ng J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Program, na nagpapahintulot sa mga kwalipikadong dayuhang guro na legal na makapagturo sa U.S. bilang bahagi ng cultural at educational exchange.
