SAN PABLO CITY, Laguna — January 12, 2026. The brutal killing of an eight‑year‑old Grade 3 pupil in Barangay Santiago 2 continues to grip San Pablo City, Laguna, as the primary suspect—identified as a close relative of the victim’s family—denied involvement in the crime, declaring, “Malinis ang konsensya ko.”
The victim, Gianni Rick Nordero, was reported missing on January 9 after his family believed he had gone to school. His bag was left at home, raising suspicions. Hours later, his lifeless body was discovered in a grassy area near a cave, about 50 meters from the pathway leading to the main road. Authorities confirmed that the boy sustained multiple hack wounds across his body.
The gruesome nature of the crime sparked outrage across the community and on social media, with many parents expressing fear over the safety of children in the city. Local officials quickly offered a reward of ₱150,000—₱100,000 from the San Pablo City government and ₱50,000 from Barangay Santiago 2—for information leading to the identification and conviction of the perpetrator.
Police later arrested the suspect, who is reportedly a first cousin of the victim’s father. Investigators said the possible motive may have stemmed from frequent quarrels between the suspect’s grandchild and the victim, described as “away‑bata.”
Despite the arrest, the suspect strongly denied the allegations. Speaking to authorities, he insisted: “Malinis ang konsensya ko. Hindi ako ang pumatay sa bata.” His denial has added another layer of tension to the already emotional case, as the victim’s family and the wider community demand swift justice.
San Pablo City Mayor Arcadio “Najie” Gapangada Jr. visited the wake of the victim and condemned the crime. “This is a heinous act against an innocent child. We will not stop until justice is served,” the mayor said.
Police officials also assured the public of a thorough investigation. They emphasized that while the suspect has been apprehended, evidence must be carefully examined to ensure accountability. Authorities are now gathering testimonies and forensic results to strengthen the case.
