MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a Show Cause Order against the registered owner and designated driver of a motorcycle involved in a viral Facebook video that showed a highly dangerous “Superman stunt” while the vehicle was in motion. The footage, which circulated widely online, depicted a rider lying face-down on the motorcycle with his body lifted off the seat—an act that authorities described as a clear threat to public safety.

In response, the LTO ordered both the owner and the driver to appear before the agency’s Intelligence and Investigation Division at its East Avenue office in Quezon City on January 30, 2025. They were also required to submit a notarized explanation justifying why they should not face administrative penalties for reckless driving, failure to wear a proper helmet, and operating a motorcycle while wearing improper footwear. The driver must further explain why his license should not be suspended or revoked for being deemed an “improper person” to operate a motor vehicle.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the motorcycle has been placed under alarm status, and the driver’s license has been temporarily suspended for 90 days. The LTO warned that failure to appear or submit the required documents would be treated as a waiver of the right to be heard, allowing the agency to proceed with its ruling based on available evidence.

Assistant Secretary Lacanilao emphasized that public safety remains the agency’s top priority, stressing that dangerous driving behaviors—especially those performed for online attention—will not be tolerated. His statement reflects a broader concern over how social media has fueled risky behavior on public roads, where likes and views can sometimes outweigh responsibility.

While viral stunts may bring fleeting online fame, they also expose innocent motorists and pedestrians to unnecessary danger. The incident raises an important conversation about accountability, road discipline, and the influence of digital culture on real-world behavior.

As authorities tighten enforcement, the question remains: Should social media popularity ever come at the cost of public safety on our roads? (Larawan mula sa: LTO Philippines / Facebook)
