LTO warns: no online-only payments — options available

Marijo Farah A. BenitezIpinost noong 2026-02-03 08:03:10 LTO warns: no online-only payments — options available

FEBRUARY 3, 2026 — Cash, card, or e-wallet? The Land Transportation Office (LTO) wants everyone to know: you have the right to choose. Amid reports that some branches were limiting payments to online channels, the agency clarified that no such directive exists.

In its statement, the LTO stressed that “all offices, district offices, extension offices, and allied service providers are authorized to accept multiple modes of payment,” giving clients the freedom to pay however they prefer. That means whether you’re more comfortable with cash, swiping a card, or using electronic payment apps, the choice is yours.

The agency also explained that those “convenience fees” often seen in online transactions don’t come from them. Instead, they’re charged by third-party providers to cover their own systems and services. So if you’re wondering why your online payment costs a bit more, that’s the reason — and it won’t appear on your official LTO receipt.

This clarification matters because not everyone has easy access to online payment channels. Many Filipinos still rely on cash, and the assurance that it remains a valid option helps keep government services accessible to all. At the same time, those who prefer digital convenience can continue using it — but without being forced into it.

The LTO also reminded the public that it remains committed to eliminating fixers and ensuring transparent transactions. If you encounter a branch restricting payments or charging unclear fees, you can report it directly to district offices or through the agency’s official social media channels.

Bottom line: whether you’re old-school with cash or tech-savvy with apps, the LTO says the choice is yours — and that’s how it should be.

Public service works best when people are given real choices.
