Meta under fire: Hontiveros calls foul on AI post dragging Alex Eala into politics

APRIL 3, 2026 — Senator Risa Hontiveros is calling out the dangerous spread of AI-generated fake news after false posts claimed she sought an endorsement from tennis star Alex Eala. She’s demanding accountability from Meta, and the issue raises urgent questions about how Filipinos are being manipulated online.

When Senator Risa Hontiveros posted “STOP THE LIES! Hindi ako humingi ng anumang pag-endorso ni ALEX EALA. Meta, please do something about these AI-generated posts,” she wasn’t just defending herself — she was exposing how fast and how deep fabricated content can spread in the Philippines.

The viral posts, allegedly circulated by personalities like Jay Sonza and Malou Tiquia, painted a false picture: that Eala rejected Hontiveros’ supposed plea for endorsement to avoid being dragged into politics.

The senator quickly clarified it was pure fiction.

This is a glaring example of how AI-generated disinformation is weaponized to distort public perception. We are already drowning in fake news — from manipulated photos to fabricated quotes — and now AI tools are making it easier to churn out lies that look convincing.

Think about it: Alex Eala is a rising sports icon, a symbol of Filipino pride. Dragging her name into political mudslinging doesn’t just hurt Hontiveros — it risks tainting Eala’s reputation and discouraging young athletes from engaging with the public.

Meta’s role here is crucial. If the platform doesn’t act decisively, we’re left vulnerable to a flood of synthetic propaganda. And in a country where social media practically is the public square, that’s a direct threat to democracy.

We deserve better than to be fed lies dressed up as truth. We deserve transparency, accountability, and platforms that protect — not exploit — our discourse.

Did the lies really look convincing to you — or did they scream fake right from the start?
