CAUAYAN, Negros Occidental — Tragedy struck in Cauayan, Negros Occidental, as an 11-year-old boy was found dead, buried in sand along the shoreline of Purok 1, Barangay Tiling, on February 9, 2026. The boy, identified as Jacon Gerota, had been reported missing the day before.

According to reports, Jacon’s mother sought help from K5 News FM Kabankalan around 12:15 a.m., alerting authorities and the community about her missing child. His aunt, Elsie Galagate, began searching the area near the beach, hoping that he was nearby. While inspecting the sand, she noticed two depressions, one of which appeared to sink. Upon digging, she discovered the boy’s hair and immediately called for help. Neighbors and residents joined in excavating the area until Jacon was recovered, still holding the small tool he had used to dig.

Authorities from the Cauayan Municipal Police Station responded immediately and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Early information suggests that Jacon often played at the beach, digging sand and burying himself as part of his games—a habit that tragically led to this fatal accident.

The family is mourning the sudden loss, and the community is in shock over the incident. This heartbreaking event raises urgent questions about child safety and supervision, especially in areas where playful activities can unexpectedly turn dangerous. How can communities and parents better safeguard children who play in potentially hazardous environments? (Larawan mula sa: K5 News FM Kabankalan / Facebook)
