MANILA, Philippines, Feb. 9, 2026 — The national government has earmarked P2.5 billion this year for cancer prevention and patient care programs, a move hailed by lawmakers and health advocates as a lifeline for thousands of Filipinos battling the disease.

The allocation is part of the 2026 General Appropriations Act, which sets aside P1.5 billion for the Cancer Assistance Fund (CAF) and P1 billion for the Cancer Control Program (CCP).

House Minority Leader and 4Ps party-list Rep. Marcelino Libanan emphasized the importance of the funding, saying, “Both the CAF and the CCP are lifelines for cancer patients fighting for survival. This fresh funding means earlier detection, faster treatment, and better care — especially for patients who cannot afford it.”

The CAF is designed to provide financial support for cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and laboratory services, benefiting patients, survivors, and individuals at high risk. Meanwhile, the CCP focuses on strengthening prevention programs, early detection initiatives, and nationwide awareness campaigns.

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in the Philippines, claiming nearly 100 lives every day. Health experts believe that the new funding will help reduce mortality rates by expanding access to essential services, particularly for indigent patients who often struggle with the high costs of treatment.

The announcement coincides with National Cancer Awareness Month, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing the growing burden of the disease. Advocates say the allocation is a step forward, but stress that sustained investment and stronger implementation are necessary to ensure long-term impact.
