MANILA, Philippines — The City of Manila officially ushered in the Chinese New Year with a vibrant celebration at Plaza San Lorenzo Ruiz in Binondo, featuring the ceremonial lighting of the Golden Prosperity Horse. The event was led by Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso, alongside Vice Mayor Chi Atienza, Councilors, and officials from the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCIII) and the Manila Chinatown Development Council.

Central to the festivities was the traditional Eye Dotting Ceremony, a symbolic ritual believed to awaken the spirit, wisdom, and bring good fortune. The act not only celebrated Chinese heritage but also reflected Manila’s commitment to blending cultural traditions with civic engagement.

Mayor Domagoso emphasized the significance of the Year of the Golden Horse, which symbolizes strength, speed, and success. “This year, we envision a Manila where progress and prosperity move as swiftly and boldly as the Golden Horse itself. We aim to create opportunities, hope, and shared success for every citizen of our city,” the mayor said.

While festivals like this invigorate the city’s cultural life and tourism, they also spark reflection on how traditional values and symbolism can intersect with modern urban development. Events that unite the community can inspire collective progress, yet they raise a broader question about the balance between celebration and tangible initiatives for citywide advancement.
