TAYABAS, Quezon — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) Calabarzon has ordered the driver of a van involved in a fatal road accident in Tayabas City, Quezon to formally explain his actions, as authorities move to determine accountability in yet another tragic traffic incident. The crash, which occurred on February 9 in Barangay Lakawan, resulted in the deaths of two motorcycle passengers and left the motorcycle driver seriously injured.
LTO Calabarzon Regional Director Elmer Decena issued a Show Cause Order against both the van driver and its registered owner, directing them to submit an official explanation on why they should not face administrative charges related to the incident. This step reflects the agency’s intent to go beyond initial police findings and examine possible violations under transport and road safety regulations.
Police reports indicate that the van was allegedly traveling at high speed when it collided with the motorcycle. The impact proved fatal for the two riders, highlighting once again how speeding remains one of the leading causes of deadly road accidents in the country. Adding to public concern was the report that the van driver attempted to flee the scene after the crash, only to be quickly apprehended by authorities.
Investigators are also considering the possibility that the van was operating as a colorum vehicle. If confirmed, this could explain the driver’s alleged attempt to escape and would point to a broader, long-standing issue: the continued presence of illegally operating vehicles on public roads despite repeated enforcement campaigns.
This case underscores a recurring pattern in Philippine road tragedies—lax discipline, illegal transport operations, and the perception that consequences can often be avoided. While the issuance of a Show Cause Order is a crucial step toward accountability, many believe that stronger enforcement, faster resolution of cases, and harsher penalties are necessary to truly deter reckless behavior.
As families grieve lives lost in an accident that may have been prevented, the incident raises a pressing question for authorities and motorists alike: will this investigation lead to real change on the roads, or will it fade into yet another reminder of a system struggling to enforce safety before tragedy strikes?
