QUEZON CITY, Philippines, Feb. 12, 2026 — The father of the 23-year-old student who died after falling from the platform of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Fernando Poe Jr. Station has decided not to pursue charges against the driver of the vehicle that was struck during the incident.
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) confirmed that the father executed a notarized affidavit stating he would not file a complaint against the motorist, a 31-year-old mechanical engineer from Antipolo, Rizal. As a result, the driver was released from police custody on Thursday afternoon.
QCPD spokesperson Maj. Jennifer Gannaban said the motorist fully cooperated with authorities during the investigation. “The father executed a notarized letter manifesting that he is not pursuing a complaint against the driver. Thereafter, the driver was released from the custody of Traffic Sector 6 at 4:10 p.m.,” the QCPD noted in its official statement.
Police investigators also reviewed CCTV footage and found no clear signs of negligence on the part of the driver. “Our investigation showed no apparent negligence. The driver was simply in the path of the victim who fell from the station platform,” the QCPD explained.
The tragic incident occurred on February 11 at around 10:30 a.m., when the student suddenly jumped from the elevated platform and landed on the moving vehicle along EDSA northbound. Emergency responders declared the victim dead at the scene despite attempts to revive him.
The QCPD extended condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public of a fair and transparent investigation. The case has sparked discussions on commuter safety, with calls for stronger protective barriers at train stations to prevent similar tragedies.
