CEBU CITY, Philippines — February 18, 2026. A man is in critical condition after being accidentally shot in the head while his teenage friend was reportedly playing with a firearm.

Police said the incident happened inside a residence where the two were spending time together. According to initial investigation, the teenage suspect was handling the gun when it suddenly discharged, hitting his companion in the head. 

Witnesses told authorities that the shooting appeared to be accidental, though investigators are still determining how the firearm was obtained and why it was accessible to minors.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and remains under intensive care. The teenage suspect surrendered to police shortly after the incident and admitted to firing the weapon. 

“Had he any intentions to kill the victim, he would have escaped,” one officer involved in the investigation explained, noting that the circumstances point to negligence rather than intent.

Authorities are now coordinating with the family of the victim while preparing charges against the suspect. Police also reminded the public about the dangers of unsecured firearms, stressing that gun safety and responsible ownership are crucial to preventing similar tragedies.

The case has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of gun control laws, particularly in households where minors may have access to weapons. Community leaders emphasized that accidents like this highlight the urgent need for awareness campaigns on firearm safety.

As the investigation continues, officials assured that accountability will be pursued and that measures will be taken to prevent future incidents of accidental shootings among the youth.
