Robbery dragnet ends in deadly Bongabon shootout, 1 suspect killed — Legit encounter or 'nanlaban' replay?

Nueva Ecija — February 17, 2026 turned violent in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija after a dragnet operation against suspects in a reported robbery in Gabaldon ended in a deadly armed encounter.
According to the Nueva Ecija Police Provincial Office (NEPPO), one suspect was killed while a police officer was wounded during the pursuit.
Police said the Bongabon Municipal Police Station received information about a robbery incident in Gabaldon earlier that afternoon. At around 3:13 p.m., officers spotted two motorcycles carrying men believed to be involved in the crime.
When flagged down, the riders refused to stop and sped off toward Bongabon town proper, prompting a hot pursuit. The chase ended when both motorcycles lost control and crashed along the road.
The suspects attempted to flee on foot, but one of them allegedly opened fire at the pursuing officers. Police retaliated, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire. One officer was hit in the left thigh and was rushed to Bongabon District Hospital before being transferred to PJMRMC Hospital for further treatment.
Meanwhile, one suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead on arrival at around 4:00 p.m. by the attending physician. His companion was arrested at the scene and is now in police custody.
NEPPO Provincial Director PCOL Heryl “DAGUIT” L. Bruno confirmed the incident and commended the swift response of the Bongabon police. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the robbery in Gabaldon and the possible involvement of the suspects in other criminal activities in the province.
This incident highlights the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in Nueva Ecija as they combat robbery and armed criminality in the region. Police have assured the public that operations will continue to ensure safety and order in affected communities.
