MANILA, Philippines — A jealous ex-convict is being blamed for a massive fire that razed hundreds of homes in Intramuros, Manila, after allegedly pouring gasoline on his own house in a fit of rage.
Barangay 655 Chairman Johny Yacub said the suspect, known locally as “alias Burnok,” had just been released on bail the night before the incident. Residents claimed he set the fire after learning that his wife had left him for another man.
Witnesses reported that the suspect doused his house with gasoline before igniting it, triggering flames that quickly spread to neighboring homes in the densely packed community. The blaze escalated to the fourth alarm, destroying at least 300 houses and leaving hundreds of families homeless.
Firefighters battled the inferno late into the night, with thick smoke billowing across the Manila skyline. Authorities estimated the damage at around ₱1.5 million.
Angry residents allegedly assaulted the suspect before police took him into custody. He is now facing charges of arson and physical injuries.
Officials said the incident highlights the dangers of domestic disputes escalating into community-wide tragedies, as the fire displaced scores of families who are now seeking shelter and assistance.
