QUEZON CITY — The first day of trial proceedings at the Sandiganbayan Sixth Division on the malversation case involving former Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co and nine officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Mimaropa was briefly disrupted after a student’s ringing phone interrupted the session.

The court immediately imposed a fine on the student, reminding attendees that electronic devices must be turned off or placed on silent mode inside the courtroom.

The trial itself centers on allegations of misuse of ₱289.5 million in public funds for a flood control project in Oriental Mindoro.

Prosecutors began presenting evidence on March 3, 2026, including financial records and audit findings, while defense lawyers prepared to challenge the charges.

Reports confirmed that Zaldy Co was absent and has been declared a fugitive from justice, while nine former DPWH officials attended the proceedings.

The Sandiganbayan emphasized its commitment to ensuring a fair and orderly trial despite the minor disturbance, underscoring the judiciary’s zero-tolerance policy for disruptions in high-profile corruption cases.

The case continues this week, with government auditors and witnesses expected to testify as part of the prosecution’s presentation.
