SAN JOSE DEL MONTE, Bulacan — Residents in San Jose del Monte City, Bulacan recently benefited from a community initiative led by personnel from the San Jose del Monte City Police Station aimed at helping commuters with their daily transportation needs.

Police officers Pat Murillo and Pat Bernardino, mobile patrollers assigned to Sector 1, organized a “Libreng Sakay” (Free Ride) program to provide transportation assistance to members of the community.

The initiative offered free rides to residents, particularly students, workers, senior citizens, and other commuters who regularly rely on public transportation to reach their destinations. By offering transportation support, the program sought to ease the burden of travel expenses while also helping residents move safely and efficiently around the city.

Community outreach activities such as “Libreng Sakay” have increasingly become part of local police engagement efforts. Beyond law enforcement duties, police units are often encouraged to participate in programs that strengthen relationships with the public and address everyday concerns faced by citizens.

In many urban areas across the Philippines, transportation costs continue to be a challenge for commuters, especially for students and minimum-wage workers who travel long distances each day. Programs like this can provide temporary relief while also highlighting the importance of community cooperation.

While the initiative may appear simple, gestures like these can help build trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve, showing a more service-oriented approach to policing.

As similar programs gain attention online, they raise an interesting question about the role of public institutions in everyday life. Should community service programs like free transport initiatives become a regular effort among local government agencies and police units to better support ordinary commuters?
