Meralco announced that electricity rates will increase by P0.64 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) this March, citing higher generation charges and adjustments in pass-through costs.
MANILA, March 11, 2026 — The country’s largest power distributor confirmed that the adjustment will raise the typical household bill by around P128 for those consuming 200 kWh per month. Meralco explained that the increase is primarily due to higher costs from power suppliers, including independent producers and the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market.
In a statement, Meralco said, “The increase in generation charges this month is the main driver of the adjustment. This reflects the higher fuel costs and market prices that have affected supply contracts.” The company added that transmission and system loss charges also contributed to the overall hike.
The announcement comes at a time when consumers are already grappling with rising food and service prices ahead of looming fuel hikes. Economic analysts warn that the electricity rate adjustment could further intensify inflationary pressures, especially for low-income households.
Meralco emphasized that the rate increase is a pass-through cost, meaning the company does not earn from generation and transmission charges. Officials assured customers that they are working with regulators to mitigate future spikes and encourage energy conservation to manage household expenses.
For now, households across Metro Manila and nearby provinces should expect higher electricity bills starting this month, as the P0.64 per kWh increase takes effect.
