MANILA, Philippines — Political commentator and international relations scholar Sass Rogando Sasot has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the alleged “maleta delivery” scandal after remarks made by Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla, the Ombudsman of the Philippines.

In a social media post, Sasot argued that the Ombudsman did not directly deny the allegation involving suitcases reportedly filled with cash that were allegedly delivered to certain government officials. Instead, she said Remulla merely pointed out that one of the incidents referenced in the evidence may have occurred during the administration of former president Rodrigo Duterte.

“Ombudsman Remulla didn’t deny the maleta scandal,” Sasot wrote. “He just said there was also one incident during the Duterte administration involving a delivery to Speaker Velasco.”

The reference was reportedly directed at former House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco. Sasot added that if an incident indeed occurred during Velasco’s tenure, it should also be investigated alongside the other allegations mentioned in the affidavit.

The issue stems from a joint affidavit submitted by 18 individuals who identified themselves as former Marines, claiming they had delivered suitcases allegedly containing large amounts of cash to certain lawmakers and government officials between 2022 and 2025.

During a press conference, Ombudsman Remulla said that one of the photographs presented as evidence was reportedly taken during the Duterte administration.

“Duterte time definitely yung isa roon,” Remulla said, referring to information reportedly brought to his attention.

Authorities are currently reviewing the credibility of the affidavit, photographs, and other supporting evidence to determine whether the allegations have factual basis. As of now, the claims remain under evaluation and no final findings have been announced.

The controversy has sparked discussion online and in political circles, raising broader questions about transparency and accountability in public institutions. As the investigation continues, the public is left to consider a difficult but important question: Will the ongoing scrutiny uncover the truth behind the alleged “maleta deliveries,” or will the controversy deepen political divisions without clear answers?
