CAVITE, Philippines — Elpidio “Kiko” Barzaga Jr., representative of the 4th District of Cavite, has reacted to the continuing rise in the prices of basic commodities in the Philippines, as concerns over inflation and the cost of living intensify.

In a social media comment that quickly circulated online, Barzaga pointed out that the recent increases are not limited to fuel prices alone. According to him, other essential services and goods have also seen price hikes.

“Di lang pala gasolina ang tumaas, pati pala kuryente, tubig, at bigas! Bagong Pilipinas, Bagong Maleta!”

The remark referenced the “Bagong Pilipinas” slogan associated with the administration of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. while also alluding to ongoing political controversies involving alleged cash deliveries popularly referred to online as the “maleta” issue.

Barzaga’s statement came amid broader concerns about inflation and the rising cost of energy, developments that some analysts link to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East—a region that plays a crucial role in the global supply of oil.

Higher fuel costs can often trigger a chain reaction in the economy, pushing up transportation expenses, electricity rates, and even food prices such as rice.

The lawmaker’s comments also touched on allegations of corruption circulating in public discourse, with some critics calling for clearer accountability should evidence emerge involving government officials.

The remarks have fueled further debate on social media and among political observers regarding the country’s economic direction and governance challenges during a period of global uncertainty.

As prices continue to rise and political narratives unfold, many Filipinos are left reflecting on a pressing question: Are these economic pressures mainly driven by global events—or are deeper governance issues shaping the country’s current challenges?
