Manila, Philippines — Traditional jeepneys will see a P1.00 fare hike, while modern jeepneys will implement a P2.00 increase, according to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

The decision was finalized after consultations with transport groups and regulators, who argued that the relentless rise in diesel costs has made it increasingly difficult for drivers and operators to sustain daily operations.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez confirmed the adjustment in a televised interview, stating, “Inaprubahan na po natin kagabi ang pagtaas ng pamasahe pagdating sa mga provincial buses, metro buses, P2P, kasama din po ang jeepneys at airport taxis.” He emphasized that the fare hike was necessary to keep public transport viable amid record-high fuel prices.

Industry forecasts show diesel prices could rise by P19 to P22 per liter this week, with gasoline expected to increase by P12 to P16 per liter. Analysts warn that diesel may breach the P100 per liter mark, putting immense pressure on transport operators and commuters alike.

Transport groups welcomed the fare hike, saying it provides much-needed relief for drivers who have been absorbing losses due to escalating fuel costs. However, commuter advocates expressed concern that the increase will add to the financial strain of ordinary Filipinos already grappling with higher food and utility prices.

The DOTr reiterated its commitment to balancing commuter affordability with driver sustainability, highlighting ongoing programs such as fuel subsidies and modernization initiatives. Officials stressed that the fare adjustment is part of broader efforts to stabilize the transport sector during volatile economic conditions.

This latest fare increase underscores the ripple effect of global fuel price movements on local transportation, with jeepneys — the country’s most iconic mode of public transport — once again at the center of balancing affordability and sustainability.
