TAGKAWAYAN, Quezon — In a significant boost to local agriculture, the 10.04-kilometer Sta. Monica–Sto. Niño–Manato Station Farm-to-Market Road (FMR) was officially inaugurated and turned over on March 26, 2026, under the Department of Agriculture’s Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP). The project is designed to provide farmers and residents with reliable, all-weather access to markets and essential services.
Stretching across the barangays of Sta. Monica, Sto. Niño, San Roque, and Manato Station, the newly concreted road connects to major thoroughfares such as Maharlika and Quirino Highways, linking local agricultural hubs to Lucena City, Metro Manila, and neighboring provinces. As a climate-resilient infrastructure, the road is engineered to withstand extreme weather conditions, ensuring long-term service and minimizing disruption to rural communities.
Governor Helen Tan attended the inauguration, emphasizing the importance of proper maintenance and responsible usage to maximize the road’s benefits. She also reminded motorists and travelers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic discipline, while encouraging barangays along the route to implement measures that guarantee safety for all road users.
Beyond convenience, the project is expected to accelerate the transport of agricultural products, lower logistics costs, and stimulate the local economy. By reducing barriers between farmers and consumers, it holds the promise of improving income opportunities and fostering more resilient rural livelihoods.
Yet, this development raises a critical question: Can physical infrastructure alone truly transform rural economies, or must it be accompanied by broader support systems—such as market access, credit, and training—to ensure sustainable growth? The Tagkawayan FMR provides a concrete foundation, but its long-term impact will depend on the communities’ ability to leverage it effectively.
