DAVAO CITY, Philippines — A Finnish national was arrested on Sunday, March 29, 2026, after allegedly assaulting a traffic enforcer during a confrontation in downtown Davao City, police confirmed.
Authorities identified the suspect as a 38-year-old foreigner who reportedly struck a member of the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) following a traffic violation.
Witnesses said the enforcer had flagged down the suspect for disregarding traffic rules, but the situation escalated when the foreigner became aggressive.
Police officers immediately responded to the incident and placed the suspect under custody. The traffic enforcer sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby clinic for medical treatment.
Davao City Police Office spokesperson Lt. Col. Maria Teresa Gaspan said charges of physical injury and assault upon a person in authority are being prepared against the suspect. “We will not tolerate any act of violence against our traffic enforcers who are simply doing their job,” Gaspan stated.
The incident has sparked discussions online, with netizens calling for stricter enforcement of laws against foreigners who violate local regulations. City officials emphasized that all individuals, regardless of nationality, are subject to Philippine laws and must respect authorities.
The Finnish national remains in police custody as of press time, pending the filing of formal charges. The CTTMO assured the public that its personnel will continue to enforce traffic rules despite the risks they face on the road.
