TAGKAWAYAN, Quezon — Two drivers were injured following a collision between two cargo trucks along Quirino Highway, Tagkawayan, Quezon on the morning of April 1, 2026. The incident occurred in Barangay San Francisco, a stretch of road known for its steep inclines and sharp curves.
According to initial investigations, one of the trucks was navigating an uphill, curved section heading southbound, while the other was descending from the opposite direction carrying a load of pebbles. Authorities reported that the downhill truck allegedly experienced brake failure as it approached the curve. In panic, the driver jumped out of the vehicle before it veered off and collided with the oncoming truck.
Both drivers sustained minor injuries and were given immediate attention. The accident was later settled amicably between the parties involved. However, the crash caused temporary traffic congestion in the area, slowing down the movement of vehicles along the highway.
While the situation did not result in fatalities, it raises important concerns about road safety—particularly in areas with challenging terrain. Brake failure in heavy vehicles, especially those carrying loads, can have serious consequences, putting not only drivers but also other motorists at risk.
This incident also highlights the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, strict safety checks, and driver preparedness when navigating high-risk roads. Are current regulations and inspections enough to ensure that vehicles, especially cargo trucks, are roadworthy?
As traffic returns to normal, the event serves as a reminder that even a single mechanical failure can lead to potentially life-threatening situations.
With accidents like this occurring on steep and curved roads, are we doing enough to ensure the safety of both drivers and the public?
