APRIL 21, 2026 — The Philippines and the United States have just launched the biggest Balikatan military drills in history, with over 17,000 troops from seven nations and observers from 17 more, underscoring Manila’s deepening defense ties amid regional tensions and global conflicts. This year’s exercise is not just about training — it’s about signaling strength, unity, and readiness in the Indo-Pacific.

The largest Balikatan yet

Balikatan 2026, running from April 20 to May 8, is the 41st iteration of the annual drills. Traditionally a bilateral exercise between the Philippines and the US, it has now evolved into a multilateral endeavor.

This year includes combat troops from Japan, Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, and the UK, with observers from countries like Poland, the Netherlands, and Lithuania. For the first time, Japan has deployed combat personnel, marking a significant expansion of regional cooperation.

AFP Chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. revealed that US Indo-Pacific Command head Admiral Samuel Paparo assured him that despite the Middle East war, Washington’s commitment to the Philippines remains “ironclad.” Brawner emphasized that Balikatan is no longer just about bilateral training but about shared responsibility for peace.

“Together, we train across the breadth of our archipelago … where preparation becomes deterrence,” he said.

The drills will test modern defense capabilities across land, air, sea, and cyberspace, including the integration of advanced systems like the Typhon missile platform and the anticipated BrahMos. The Philippine Coast Guard is deploying 500 personnel and four vessels for maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, and disaster response scenarios.

This reflects a broader focus — not just on combat readiness, but also on humanitarian and environmental missions.

Regional reactions

While allies celebrate the expanded cooperation, China has criticized the drills, warning that countries involved are “playing with fire” and that external forces are destabilizing the region. This highlights the delicate balance the Philippines must navigate: strengthening alliances without escalating tensions.

The Philippine perspective

For Filipinos, Balikatan is more than a military spectacle. It’s a reminder of our strategic vulnerability as an archipelago sitting at the crossroads of great power competition. The presence of allies offers reassurance, but are we becoming too dependent on foreign militaries for our security? Or is this the necessary path to safeguard our sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea?

The drills also carry a domestic message. With the Coast Guard’s involvement in disaster response, Balikatan shows that military cooperation can directly benefit ordinary Pinoys — whether through faster rescue operations during typhoons or stronger deterrence against incursions in our waters.

As the Philippines hosts the largest Balikatan in history, do you believe we are truly building our own strength, or are we simply leaning harder on the shoulders of giants?
