BERLIN — February 28, 2026 — German automaker BMW has announced a global recall of hundreds of thousands of vehicles due to a potential fire hazard, according to Germany’s motor vehicle authority (KBA). The recall affects multiple models, including the i7, i5, 5 Series, 7 Series, and M5, manufactured between 2022 and 2025.
Authorities said that improper installation of the cockpit wiring harness could damage cables during routine replacement of the microfilter. This defect may result in a short circuit, which in turn could cause overheating and, in rare cases, a fire. KBA confirmed that 337,374 vehicles are potentially affected worldwide, with recalls spanning Europe, the United States, Asia, and other markets.
BMW also issued a separate recall covering approximately 575,000 vehicles tied to starter relays produced between July 2020 and July 2022. The company explained that wear in the starter’s magnetic switch could lead to overheating, electrical short circuits, and localized fires while driving.
Owners of affected vehicles are advised to contact authorized BMW service centers immediately to verify whether their cars are included in the recall. BMW has pledged to carry out inspections and repairs free of charge.
The recall underscores growing scrutiny of automotive safety standards, as regulators and manufacturers work to prevent electrical and fire risks in increasingly complex vehicle systems. BMW emphasized that customer safety remains its top priority and urged drivers not to delay in checking their vehicles.
This large-scale recall is one of the most significant safety actions by BMW in recent years, highlighting the challenges automakers face as they integrate advanced electronics and new technologies into modern cars.
