MARIKINA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has drawn public attention after taking swift and decisive action against those involved in a viral road rage incident at the Marikina City Riverbanks on December 24, 2025. Under the leadership of LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus V. Lacanilao, the agency promptly issued Show Cause Orders (SCOs) against the drivers and registered owners of a Ford Ranger pick-up and a Toyota Vios linked to the altercation.

In an official directive, Asec. Lacanilao ordered the concerned parties to personally appear before the LTO–Intelligence and Investigation Division (LTO-IID) at East Avenue, Quezon City on January 7, 2026. They were instructed to submit verified or sworn explanations justifying why they should not be held administratively liable for possible violations such as reckless driving and obstruction of traffic, and why their driver’s licenses should not be suspended or revoked for being deemed improper persons to operate a motor vehicle.

Further investigation revealed that the Ford Ranger’s registration had already expired as of September 9, 2024, placing additional liability on its registered owner for failure to comply with compulsory vehicle registration laws. Both vehicles were also placed under “ALARM” status, effectively freezing any transactions involving them while the investigation is ongoing.

Most notably, the LTO imposed a 90-day preventive suspension on the drivers’ licenses of both motorists—an action that underscores the agency’s firm stance on road safety and accountability. From a broader perspective, the speed of the LTO’s response under Asec. Lacanilao sends a strong message that viral road rage incidents will not be dismissed as mere online spectacles. Instead, they will be treated as serious threats to public safety. The agency’s firm reminder—that failure to appear and submit sworn statements would result in decisions based solely on existing evidence—reinforces the principle that due process goes hand in hand with swift enforcement. This decisive action may serve as a deterrent and a reminder that discipline and responsibility on the road are non-negotiable. (Larawan: Screengrab from a video posted on Facebook)
