MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has urged the public to avoid posting “at the moment” updates on social media, warning that such real-time disclosures of location and activities could expose individuals to risks such as theft, burglary, or even personal harm.

PNP officials explained that criminals often monitor social media platforms to identify potential targets. “When you post your exact location or activities in real time, you may be unknowingly giving away information that can be exploited by those with ill intent,” the agency said in a statement.

The advisory comes as many Filipinos prepare for holiday trips and family gatherings. The PNP reminded citizens that oversharing online can alert criminals that homes are unattended, making them vulnerable to break-ins.

Alongside the warning, the PNP also released safety tips for travelers:

  • Avoid posting real-time updates of your location or activities. Share photos and experiences only after returning home.
  • Secure your home before leaving. Lock doors and windows, and if possible, ask a trusted neighbor or relative to check on your property.
  • Limit public visibility of travel plans. Do not announce exact dates and destinations on social media.
  • Keep valuables safe. Use hotel safes or secure bags when traveling.
  • Stay vigilant in transit. Watch over your belongings in airports, bus terminals, and public places.
  • Maintain communication. Inform family or close friends of your itinerary and check in regularly.
  • Emergency readiness. Save local emergency hotlines and keep identification documents accessible.

The PNP emphasized that personal safety begins with responsible online behavior and preparedness. “We encourage everyone to enjoy the holidays responsibly, both in the real world and online,” the statement added.
