MANILA, Philippines — A video circulating on social media has captured a man reportedly firing a handgun several times from a balcony while celebrating the New Year. The firearm used in the footage resembles an M1911 pistol, authorities and netizens noted.

The video, shared on Facebook by a user named Pol Omani—who is believed to be the man in the footage—has stirred public concern. Omani, according to his profile, is an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in Italy. In follow-up posts, he claimed that the gun used was only a toy. Nevertheless, this incident is not isolated; reports indicate that he allegedly performed a similar act during the previous New Year’s celebration on January 1, 2025.

It remains unclear whether the incident occurred in the Philippines or abroad. Regardless of location, celebratory gunfire is strictly prohibited in both countries. In the Philippines, firing a gun during festivities is considered illegal and carries heavy penalties under existing laws. Italy likewise enforces strict criminal sanctions against unauthorized firearm use.

While some may view such acts as harmless displays of festivity, the risks are tangible: stray bullets can cause injury or death, and incidents like these underscore the need for public awareness on firearm safety. Experts urge communities to find safe and legal alternatives to celebrate milestones, highlighting that revelry should never come at the expense of public safety.

This viral video serves as a stark reminder: no celebration is worth a life, and responsible behavior must accompany the joy of welcoming a New Year. (Larawan: Pol Omani / Facebook)
