January 15, 2026 – Calamba City, Laguna. A 21-year-old man died after being brutally attacked by the former live-in partner of his girlfriend inside a house in Calamba, Laguna. The incident, captured on CCTV, showed the suspect entering the room, switching on the light, and immediately assaulting the victim, identified as James, who was asleep beside his girlfriend, Liana.
Police reports revealed that James sustained no fewer than twenty consecutive punches and two powerful kicks to the head. Despite Liana’s attempts to stop the assault, the suspect continued the attack before leaving the house. The suspect, a 23-year-old man who had previously lived in the same room with Liana two years ago, claimed he was only there to retrieve clothes belonging to their four-year-old child. Liana, however, said she never gave him consent to enter the house, which is owned by her parents.
James was rushed to the hospital after complaining of severe head pain. He remained confined for four days and even celebrated his birthday on January 11 while in recovery. However, he succumbed to his injuries on January 14 due to a fatal head injury.
According to Liana and the victim’s mother, jealousy may have been the motive behind the attack. “Hindi niya pa rin po matanggap na talagang hiwalay na po kami. Mahayos naman po kami naghiwalay noon kahit hindi na siya magsustento. Siguro sa sobrang selos,” Liana said, adding that the suspect had not shown up since January 10 when summoned by barangay officials.
Police confirmed that the suspect will face murder charges, noting that the victim was defenseless and asleep when the assault occurred. “Under murder kasi po itong ating biktima ay natutulog, walang kalaban-laban, sinugod at nakamamatay ang kanyang pag-atake,” an investigator explained.
James’s family is now seeking financial assistance, as they face hospital bills and funeral expenses amounting to ₱200,000. The Calamba police assured that they are helping the family pursue justice and are intensifying efforts to locate and arrest the suspect.
The tragedy has sparked calls for calm dialogue and responsible handling of personal disputes to prevent similar violent incidents. “Maiwasan itong mga pangyayari na ito sa pamamagitan ng pakikipag-usap sa mahinahon na pamamaraan. Ginagamitan po ito ng isip, hindi lang po emosyon,” one official said.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue their manhunt for the suspect.
Too Much Love Can Kill
This was not love gone wrong. It was obsession unleashed. A man entered a home without consent, switched on the light, and beat a sleeping person until the damage became fatal.
Jealousy is often offered as context, almost as mitigation. It should be treated as a warning sign. Twenty punches and kicks to the head are not emotion. They are intent. This pattern has appeared before, and repeats.
When affection turns into ownership, violence follows. When separation is refused, danger escalates. Calling this a personal dispute dulls accountability and teaches silence.
The law must answer clearly, swiftly, and publicly. Love that demands control is not love at all. How many warnings must be ignored before obsession is recognized as lethal?
