PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — Authorities arrested a grandmother at the Puerto Princesa International Airport after she was found carrying live ammunition and a magazine belonging to her soldier son, police confirmed Thursday.
The suspect, identified as a 64-year-old resident of Palawan, was intercepted during routine security screening when airport personnel discovered the items inside her bag. Initial reports said she was unaware that the ammunition and magazine had been placed there, claiming she accidentally carried them while preparing her belongings.
Police investigators clarified that the ammunition and magazine were traced back to her son, a member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. “She admitted that the items belonged to her son, who is an active soldier, and that she unintentionally brought them to the airport,” authorities stated.
The grandmother was immediately taken into custody for violating Republic Act 10591, also known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act. She now faces charges related to illegal possession of ammunition.
Airport officials emphasized that strict enforcement of aviation security protocols remains in place to prevent similar incidents. They reminded passengers to thoroughly check their bags before traveling to avoid carrying prohibited items.
The suspect is currently detained at the Puerto Princesa City Police Station while awaiting further legal proceedings. Police said coordination with the military is ongoing to verify the ownership of the confiscated items and to determine if additional charges will be filed.
This incident highlights the importance of vigilance in airport security and the need for passengers to exercise caution when handling personal belongings, especially in households with military personnel.
