New ₱23 million footbridge in Calapan opens — Is corruption hiding in plain sight?

Robel A. AlmoguerraIpinost noong 2026-01-22 00:47:23 New ₱23 million footbridge in Calapan opens — Is corruption hiding in plain sight?

CALAPAN, Oriental Mindoro The highly anticipated footbridge at the Mindoro State University – Calapan City Campus has officially opened to the public. With a total cost of ₱23,838,505.12, this is the first pedestrian footbridge in Mindoro, intended to improve safety for students and the general public along busy streets near the university.

The project was implemented through the initiative of Arnan C. Panaligan, Representative of the First District of Oriental Mindoro, in coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Officials said the bridge will help prevent road accidents, particularly during peak school hours, allowing students and pedestrians to cross safely without risking collisions with vehicles.

However, the price tag and funding source have prompted skepticism among some members of the public. Critics argue that such high-cost infrastructure projects in the Philippines often raise questions about transparency, procurement processes, and potential mismanagement of public funds. While the footbridge may indeed serve its intended purpose, observers warn that the focus should also remain on ensuring accountability and proper monitoring of construction projects to prevent misuse of taxpayer money.

The situation underscores a broader issue in infrastructure development: how can citizens be sure that public funds are being used efficiently and honestly? As the community celebrates a new safety measure, the debate over governance, transparency, and corruption lingers. Is this ₱23 million footbridge truly a milestone for public safety, or is it another example of corruption hiding in plain sight? (Larawan: Ayok Tolentino / Facebook)
