CAMARINES SUR, Philippines — February 17, 2026. A detainee was killed after allegedly attempting to escape and engaging police officers in a firefight while being transported in Del Gallego, Camarines Sur. Authorities confirmed that four police officers are now facing homicide charges in connection with the incident.

According to the police report, operatives from the Catanduanes Police Provincial Office were transporting two detainees from Pasig City to Catanduanes when the incident occurred.

The detainees had earlier been arrested for murder and rape. One of them reportedly tried to flee and fought back against the escorting officers, prompting the police to respond with gunfire.

The detainee sustained fatal injuries during the confrontation. The incident has since sparked questions about police handling of suspects in custody, particularly in cases where detainees are transported over long distances.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the four officers involved have been charged with homicide and will undergo investigation. Authorities stressed that accountability will be pursued to ensure transparency in the case.

Human rights advocates have called for a thorough probe, noting that claims of suspects “nanlaban” or fighting back during police operations have been a recurring issue in past cases. They emphasized the need for clear protocols to safeguard the rights of individuals under custody while ensuring the safety of law enforcers.

The Department of Justice is expected to review the charges and determine the next steps in the legal proceedings. Meanwhile, the PNP assured the public that it will cooperate fully with investigators to establish the facts surrounding the detainee’s death.
