MANGALDAN, Pangasinan — Two men riding a motorcycle were arrested after allegedly throwing a liquor bottle at police officers stationed at a checkpoint in Mangaldan.
Authorities said the suspects had initially been stopped for not wearing helmets and were issued citation tickets before being allowed to leave.
According to a report by GMA Regional TV One North Central Luzon, the men returned minutes later and hurled a bottle of alcohol at the officers manning the checkpoint. No one was injured, but police described the act as direct assault against law enforcement.
“Maituturing na itong pambabatos at direct assault sa mga pulis,” Police Captain Hernando Martines, chief investigator, said in an interview.
The suspects attempted to flee but were later apprehended in a hot pursuit operation. Investigators revealed that the two had come from a drinking session prior to the incident. A relative of one of the suspects told reporters that the men regretted their actions. “Nagsisisi naman daw ang dalawa sa kanilang ginawa,” the relative said.
Authorities emphasized that checkpoints are legal and necessary for public safety, particularly in enforcing traffic rules and preventing crimes. The incident highlights the risks faced by police officers during routine operations and underscores the importance of compliance with road safety regulations.
The suspects are now facing charges related to direct assault against persons in authority, which carries serious legal consequences under Philippine law. Police officials reminded the public that any act of aggression toward law enforcement will not be tolerated and urged motorists to cooperate during inspections.
This case has drawn attention in Pangasinan, where local leaders continue to call for discipline and respect toward authorities. The arrests serve as a reminder that violent reactions to routine enforcement measures can lead to criminal liability and further jeopardize community safety.
