PUERTO PRINCESA CITY — Parents and students of Sta. Monica National High School raised concerns after a viral video showed a teacher instructing students to leave their pants at the school gate to be burned alongside an old Philippine flag. The incident, which happened last Friday, has sparked debate over discipline and student welfare.
In the video, a teacher can be heard saying, “So lahat ng papalitan na pants ay ilalagay po natin dito, iiwan na po natin dito… magsusunog po tayo ng ating lumang flag, isasabay po natin ang mga pants nyo.”
The directive came after several students were stopped at the gate for wearing “baggy pants” that did not conform to the school’s uniform policy. Some were unable to go home until their parents brought replacement clothing.
Parents criticized the move, saying that while they understood the importance of a dress code, threatening minors with the burning of their clothes was inappropriate. One parent noted that some students were forced to wait until late in the evening before being allowed to leave, calling the practice excessive and humiliating.
The Department of Education (DepEd) has clear guidelines on school uniforms under DepEd Order No. 46, s. 2015, which states that wearing a uniform should not be a prerequisite for admission or class attendance.
Schools may prescribe uniforms to promote equality and discipline, but students cannot be denied entry or punished solely for non-compliance. DepEd also emphasizes that disciplinary measures must respect the dignity of learners and avoid actions that may cause embarrassment or harm.
As of now, Sta. Monica National High School has not issued an official statement, but a press conference with the City DepEd is expected in the coming days. The incident has fueled discussions on balancing discipline with student rights, with parents urging school authorities to adopt more constructive approaches to enforcing uniform policies.
This controversy highlights the need for schools to strictly adhere to DepEd rules, ensuring that discipline is carried out in ways that protect the welfare and dignity of students while maintaining order within the institution.
