MANILA — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has launched an investigation into Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando following reports of alleged abuses along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX).

The probe was ordered after the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) received multiple complaints about Fernando’s convoy allegedly blocking lanes and engaging in road rage incidents.

According to reports, the controversy escalated after a Bulacan Capitol convoy was accused of obstructing the vehicle of a presidential son on NLEX last Saturday evening. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla confirmed that he called Fernando directly to address the matter.

“It doesn’t matter if it was a presidential son or not. Naging ugali na ni Governor Fernando na pag nabiyahe siya ng NLEX ay apat na lane ang occupied niya na walang puwedeng mag-overtake,” Remulla said, describing the governor’s behavior as “king-like.”

The DILG also ordered Fernando to surrender firearms registered under his name, as well as the vehicles and security escorts involved in the incident. These have since been released, but the LTO has been tasked to determine whether Fernando or his convoy violated traffic laws and regulations.

Remulla emphasized that the investigation is not about personalities but about accountability. “Don’t act like a king,” he said, adding that public officials must set an example in following traffic rules.

As of now, Governor Fernando has not issued a formal statement regarding the allegations. The LTO’s findings are expected to clarify whether administrative or legal sanctions will be imposed.

The case has sparked public debate on the conduct of government officials on public roads, with many calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to ensure that no one, regardless of position, is above the law. The outcome of the investigation will be closely watched, as it may set a precedent for how authorities handle similar complaints against high-ranking officials.
