MANILA — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has admitted that his camp has begun discussions with potential candidates for the 2028 presidential elections, saying the search for the country’s next leader is already underway.
Speaking at the ASEAN Editors and Economic Opinion Leaders Forum in Makati City on February 24, Marcos emphasized that Filipinos should elect a “like-minded president” who prioritizes national progress over politics.
“We have some people that we are talking to… some of them said, ‘No, I do not want,’” Marcos revealed, noting that the process of identifying a successor is ongoing. He underscored that the next president should be someone who understands economics, can keep inflation down, ensure food security, create jobs, improve healthcare, and fix the education system.
“Somebody who understands economics, that’s the first thing. Who understands how to create jobs, how to keep the inflation rate down, who understands how to make the people healthier, and fix the education system,” he said.
Marcos clarified that while talks are happening, he is not yet ready to make endorsements. “Timing is everything,” he remarked, stressing that it is too early to formally back a candidate.
The President’s comments come as political observers begin speculating about the 2028 race, with various names already being floated in public discussions. Marcos’ acknowledgment of ongoing talks signals that succession planning is a priority for his administration, as he seeks continuity in economic and governance reforms.
This early admission is expected to shape the political landscape in the coming years, as parties and personalities prepare for what could be one of the most closely watched elections in recent Philippine history.
