MANILA, Philippines — Gabriela party-list Representative Sarah Elago has filed a disbarment complaint against a lawyer before the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) in Pasig, citing lewd and sexist remarks directed at her. The move comes during Women’s Month, underscoring her call to defend women against harassment and misogyny.

Elago confirmed the filing in a statement, saying, “We are filing a complaint for disciplinary action against a certain lawyer before the IBP today. And this action is not only in defense of my own person and dignity, but more importantly, in defense of women I represent in Congress and the broader sector of Filipino women who continue to face sexism, misogyny, harassment, and attacks meant to silence us.”

The Gabriela lawmaker stressed that the complaint is not just a personal battle but a collective stand against degrading behavior toward women. “Hindi lang ito laban ng iisang tao, hindi laban ito ng mga kababaihan. Lalong-lalo na ‘yung mga gusto na manahimik na lang tayo at kayaan natin ang mga ganitong asal,” she said in an interview.

The lawyer’s name has not been disclosed publicly, but Elago emphasized that the remarks were obscene and disrespectful, intended to demean her as a woman and a legislator. She argued that such conduct violates the ethical standards expected of members of the legal profession.

The IBP Commission on Bar Discipline will review the complaint, which could lead to sanctions ranging from suspension to disbarment if the allegations are proven. Elago’s filing highlights the broader issue of sexism in professional and political spaces, with women leaders often subjected to harassment and derogatory comments.

Women’s rights advocates have expressed support for Elago’s move, noting that it sets a precedent for holding professionals accountable for misogynistic behavior. The case also resonates with ongoing efforts to strengthen gender equality and protect women from abuse in both online and offline platforms.

Elago’s action reflects Gabriela’s long-standing advocacy for women’s rights and dignity, reinforcing the message that harassment and sexism will not be tolerated. The outcome of the IBP proceedings is expected to send a strong signal about professional accountability and respect for women in public life.
