MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has appointed outgoing Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco as Presidential Adviser for Sustainable and Resilient Communities, marking her transition from the Department of Tourism to a new role focused on strengthening national initiatives at the community level.
Frasco’s departure from the Department of Tourism ends months of speculation about her future in government. Malacañang confirmed that she will step down as DOT chief, with Undersecretary Verna Buensuceso temporarily serving as officer-in-charge while the President considers a permanent replacement.
Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro said, “Secretary Frasco will transition from her role as Secretary of Tourism. The Department of Tourism will temporarily be headed by an officer in charge, Undersecretary Verna Buensuceso.”
The Palace emphasized that Frasco’s new position is critical as the Philippines faces increasing climate-related hazards and disruptions that affect local economies and livelihoods.
“As many areas across the country face increasing climate-related hazards and disruptions that affect local economies and livelihoods, the President has tasked Secretary Frasco to take on this role to help strengthen the implementation and sustained follow-through of priority national initiatives at the community level,” Castro said.
Frasco, who has served as DOT Secretary since 2022, was credited with spearheading tourism recovery efforts in the aftermath of the pandemic, including campaigns to boost domestic travel and international arrivals.
Her shift to the advisory role signals a broader focus on sustainability and resilience, aligning with the administration’s priorities in addressing climate change and community development.
Reports had circulated that other officials, including trade diplomat Dita Angara-Mathay, were being considered for leadership roles within the DOT, but Malacañang clarified that Buensuceso will serve as officer-in-charge until further notice.
Frasco’s appointment underscores the administration’s intent to integrate tourism expertise with sustainable community planning. Her new role is expected to involve close coordination with local governments and agencies to ensure that national programs addressing resilience, climate adaptation, and sustainable development are effectively implemented at the grassroots level.
Her departure from the DOT marks a significant reshuffle in the Marcos administration, with observers noting that the move reflects a strategic pivot toward climate resilience and community sustainability as pressing national concerns.
Frasco has yet to issue a personal statement on her transition, but Palace officials stressed that her expertise and leadership will remain vital in shaping policies that safeguard communities against environmental and economic challenges.
