At least 139,000 tricycle drivers across Metro Manila will receive ₱5,000 in cash aid starting March 17, 2026, as part of the government’s effort to cushion the impact of surging fuel prices caused by the ongoing Middle East crisis. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) confirmed that the distribution will be completed within two to three days.

MANILA, Philippines — Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian announced that the cash assistance will be distributed under the DSWD’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program. The payout will begin at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, at 30 designated sites spread across 17 local government units in the National Capital Region.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. directed the rollout in coordination with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). The aid is intended to help tricycle drivers cope with the sharp rise in fuel costs, driven higher by disruptions in global oil supply linked to the Middle East conflict.

“Sa payout sites, hindi sila sabay-sabay. May morning at the afternoon batch. Bukas, ang first batch ay magsisimula ng 6 a.m.,” Gatchalian explained, noting that the staggered schedule is designed to avoid overcrowding and ensure orderly distribution.

The DSWD emphasized that the cash aid is part of a broader government initiative to support public utility vehicle drivers, who are among the hardest hit by rising fuel prices. The assistance is expected to provide immediate relief to tricycle drivers, many of whom rely on daily earnings to support their families.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni “Banoy” Lopez and LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza II joined Gatchalian in announcing the program, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable transport workers during this period of economic strain.

The distribution of cash aid comes as fuel prices continue to climb, with motorists across the country bracing for further increases. Officials said the government will continue to explore additional measures to mitigate the impact of global oil market volatility on Filipino consumers.

This initiative highlights the administration’s focus on providing targeted assistance to sectors most affected by external economic shocks, while reinforcing the importance of coordinated action among government agencies to deliver aid swiftly and efficiently.
