REAL, Quezon — More than 1,200 residents received free healthcare services during a medical and dental mission held in Real on Thursday, April 23. The initiative provided a wide range of services aimed at improving access to basic and preventive healthcare, particularly for communities with limited means to seek treatment.
Among the services offered were medical consultations, dental care, free medicines, X-ray examinations, electrocardiogram (ECG) procedures, and laboratory tests such as blood screening, hemoglobin checks, uric acid testing, and cholesterol assessments.
According to the local government, the activity was organized to expand access to healthcare services, especially for residents who may struggle with the cost of consultations, diagnostics, or medications.
For many families in rural municipalities, free medical missions can be a crucial lifeline. They often provide healthcare that might otherwise be delayed due to financial constraints, travel distance, or shortages in regular medical facilities. Early diagnosis through screenings can prevent more serious illnesses and reduce long-term health costs.
At the same time, the popularity and necessity of these missions also reveal a larger reality: many Filipinos still rely on occasional outreach programs for services that ideally should be consistently available through the healthcare system. Preventive checkups, dental care, and basic diagnostics should not depend solely on special events.
Medical missions are commendable and can create immediate impact, but sustainable healthcare requires functioning clinics, adequate staffing, medicine availability, and regular access year-round. Temporary relief is valuable, yet long-term systems remain essential.
The event in Real demonstrates both compassion and demand. It shows that when healthcare is brought closer to the people, many will come because the need is real.
When thousands line up for free healthcare in one day, does it only show generosity—or does it also reveal how many remain underserved the rest of the year?
