Salute to workers! MRT-3, LRT-2 roll out free labor day rides

APRIL 28, 2026 — Labor Day is about to feel a little lighter for Metro Manila’s workforce. On May 1, both MRT-3 and LRT-2 will be offering free rides to workers during the busiest hours of the day — 7 to 9 in the morning and 5 to 7 in the evening. All you need is your company ID, and you’re good to go.

Think of it as a small but meaningful “thank you” from the country’s busiest train lines.

MRT-3 management put it simply: “Saludo po kami sa inyong sipag at tiyaga, Ka-Riles!”

(We salute your hard work and perseverance, Ka-Riles!)

LRT-2 echoed the sentiment, calling the free rides “a small recognition of the tireless efforts and sacrifices of Filipino workers.”

For commuters, this isn’t just symbolic — it’s practical. Anyone who’s ever squeezed into a packed train knows how much every peso matters, especially for minimum-wage earners juggling daily expenses. With fares already slashed by 50% since March 23, this Labor Day perk adds another layer of relief.

The timing couldn’t be better. Morning and evening rush hours are when the trains are at their fullest, so the free rides hit exactly where they matter most.

However, the requirement of a company ID means the benefit is geared toward formal workers, leaving out those in the informal sector who also hustle through the same crowded trains.

Still, it’s a welcome break. A free ride may not solve the bigger issues of inflation or transport woes, but it’s a gesture that reminds workers they’re seen and appreciated. And on a day meant to honor labor, that recognition counts.
