Dramanila Theater
Production proudly presents Garet: Pinoys in Chicago, a gripping Filipino stage
play by Rey E. dela Cruz that confronts the emotional, moral, and cultural
realities faced by Filipinos living abroad.
Set against the
unforgiving winter of Chicago, Garet: Pinoys in Chicago unfolds inside the
modest home of a comatose Filipino immigrant whose life has become the silent
center of a heated ethical dilemma. As friends, lovers, and acquaintances
gather, buried resentments surface and difficult questions emerge—about
responsibility, faith, love, and the boundaries of mercy. What begins as an act
of care evolves into a profound examination of conscience.
Written with
sharp dialogue and deep empathy, the play explores themes of migration,
sacrifice, martyrdom, loneliness, and moral choice, reflecting the lived
experiences of many overseas Filipinos. The narrative challenges audiences to
reflect on what it truly means to be humane—especially when compassion demands
a cost.
“Garet is not
just a character—it is a mirror held up to our shared immigrant experience,”
says Dramanila Theater Production. “This play asks us to confront the values we
carry with us, even when we are far from home.”
Garet: Pinoys in
Chicago is more than a story of one man’s fate; it is a collective portrait of
a community navigating identity and survival in a foreign land. With moments of
warmth, tension, and unsettling honesty, the production promises an emotionally
resonant theatrical experience for Filipino and international audiences alike.
