Marks & Spencer isn’t leaving us after all!

FEBRUARY 27, 2026 — For a moment, it looked like the end of an era: SSI Group, the Tantoco-led retailer that brought Marks & Spencer (M&S) to the Philippines, announced that all stores would close by May 2. Shoppers braced for farewell sales, and loyal fans of the British brand wondered where they’d get their next pack of digestive biscuits or that reliable office-ready blazer.

But M&S isn’t packing up. Instead, the company confirmed it’s simply switching franchise partners.

“After over 20 years of partnership with the SSI Group, we have made the decision to transition to a new franchise partner to support our ambitious growth plans in the region,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “We remain committed to the Philippines and the growth opportunity in the region.”

That means the brand sees the Philippines as too important to walk away from. This pivot is actually part of a bigger regional strategy, signaling that M&S wants to refresh its presence here, not retreat.

The new partner hasn’t been named yet, but the promise is crystal clear — Pinoy shoppers will still have access to the British staple, just under a different operator.

Now, what does this mean for us? For one, it’s reassurance that global brands still see value in the Philippine market, even as local tastes evolve. SSI’s move to “channel its energy and resources toward brands that reflect the current and future direction of the market” shows how competitive retail has become.

Meanwhile, M&S betting on a new partner suggests confidence that Filipinos still want their mix of affordable luxury, reliable basics, and those iconic food hall treats.

It’s also a reminder of how retail partnerships shape what we see in malls. Behind every store we stroll into, there’s a business deal dictating whether it stays or goes. And in this case, M&S is telling us: don’t worry, we’re here to stay — just with a new face running the show.

Will this fresh chapter for Marks & Spencer make us fall in love with the brand all over again?
