BAGUIO CITY — January 23, 2026 — Residents and tourists in the country’s summer capital woke up to a biting chill as temperatures dropped to 10.6°C, the coldest so far this January, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The drop from 11°C the previous day has made daily routines more challenging for locals while continuing to draw visitors eager to experience the city’s famed cool climate.

Jeepney passengers bundled up in thick jackets and scarves as they braved the early morning commute, while households reported icy tap water and difficulty adjusting to the frigid air. PAGASA noted that temperatures in higher-elevation areas of Baguio may have fallen even lower than the official reading.

The agency forecast that the cold spell is likely to persist until February or March, consistent with the northeast monsoon or amihan season.

Locals described the chill as “nakalamlammin” (very cold), a phrase now commonly exchanged in morning greetings. While the cold weather has become a tourist attraction, residents who must wake up early for work or school continue to struggle with the freezing conditions.

The city government has advised residents to take precautions against respiratory illnesses, which tend to rise during the cold months.

The cold snap has also boosted tourism, with visitors flocking to Baguio to enjoy the crisp mountain air, hot beverages, and seasonal produce. Hotels and transient houses reported higher bookings as travelers from the lowlands sought refuge from the heat.
