ILOCOS SUR — A pet dog was killed after being shot multiple times in Ilocos Sur, sparking outrage among residents and animal welfare advocates who condemned the act as a clear case of animal cruelty.
The incident occurred in Barangay Dammay, Quirino, Ilocos Sur. Witnesses said the dog was shot several times by an unidentified suspect, leaving the animal lifeless on the ground. The motive behind the shooting has not yet been established.
Police confirmed the case and said they are conducting an investigation to identify and apprehend the suspect. Authorities are reviewing possible leads and interviewing witnesses to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from animal rights groups, who stressed that such acts are punishable under the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 (Republic Act 8485, as amended by RA 10631). The law penalizes maltreatment and cruelty against animals, with violators facing imprisonment of up to two years and fines reaching ₱250,000.
Local residents expressed shock and anger, noting that the dog was well cared for by its owner and was often seen around the community. Advocates urged the public to report similar cases, emphasizing that violence against animals should not be tolerated.
“This is not just about one dog. It’s about protecting communities from senseless cruelty,” one advocate said, calling for stricter enforcement of animal protection laws.
The Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office assured the public that they are pursuing leads and will hold the perpetrator accountable. The case has also reignited calls for stronger awareness campaigns on animal welfare across the country.
