A 19-year-old graduating student tragically died after the truck he was sleeping in caught fire in Zarraga, Iloilo on March 15, 2026. Authorities are investigating whether the blaze was caused by a cigarette, electrical malfunction, or foul play.
Iloilo, Philippines — The victim, identified as Jansen “Miko” Brillo, was an Alternative Learning System (ALS) student from Mina town who was set to graduate this year. He was reportedly asleep in the passenger seat of a parked wing van in Barangay Inagdangan Centro when the fire broke out around 5 a.m.
According to police reports, Brillo was working as part of a sound system crew while pursuing his studies. Two other crew members who were sleeping at the back of the truck were rescued after the driver woke them up. The driver told investigators that he had earlier asked Brillo to buy cigarettes and did not expect him to be inside the vehicle since the door was locked.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is conducting a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Authorities are considering several possibilities, including a cigarette left inside the vehicle, faulty electrical wiring, or deliberate foul play. An autopsy is also being carried out to establish whether the victim had already succumbed before the fire or died due to smoke inhalation and burns.
Local officials expressed condolences to the family, noting the heartbreaking timing of the incident as Brillo was preparing to graduate. Residents of Zarraga have since called for stricter fire safety measures and regular vehicle inspections to prevent similar tragedies.
This incident highlights the growing number of fire-related fatalities in Iloilo this year and underscores the importance of vigilance in both personal and workplace safety. The community continues to mourn the loss of a young life cut short just as he was about to achieve a major milestone.
