An MMDA personnel died after being electrocuted by a live wire during tree-pruning operations in Sta. Mesa, Manila, on March 15, 2026, while another worker was injured and remains under observation.
Manila, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) confirmed that one of its employees was killed and another injured after accidentally coming into contact with a live wire while conducting tree-pruning work in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
The Manila Police District identified the fatality as 46-year-old Noel Calanao, a resident of Marikina City. His colleague, 62-year-old Dante Guardiano from Rizal Province, sustained injuries and is currently being treated at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.
According to investigators, the two workers were trimming trees near electrical lines when they were electrocuted. Witnesses said the incident happened suddenly, leaving little time for rescue. Both men were rushed to the hospital, but Calanao was declared dead on arrival.
The MMDA expressed condolences to the family of the victim and assured that assistance will be extended to both families affected. Officials also reminded field workers to strictly follow safety protocols, especially when working near power lines.
The Bureau of Fire Protection and the Manila Police District are conducting further investigations to determine if negligence or faulty equipment contributed to the accident.
This incident highlights the risks faced by MMDA personnel in their daily operations, particularly in tasks involving road clearing and tree maintenance near live electrical wires. Authorities are now reviewing safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The death of Noel Calanao serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of public service work and the importance of prioritizing occupational safety in high-risk environments.
