ATOK, Benguet — January 24, 2026 — Residents of this highland town experienced one of the coldest mornings of the year as temperatures plunged to 5°C, leaving vegetable crops and vehicles coated in frost. The icy conditions, brought by the northeast monsoon or amihan, created a picturesque but challenging scene for farmers and commuters alike.
Locals reported that frost blanketed cabbage, lettuce, and other highland vegetables, raising concerns about potential crop damage. Farmers said the cold snap could affect yields and market supply if the freezing conditions persist. “Kapag tumagal pa ang ganitong lamig, siguradong maaapektuhan ang ani,” one farmer lamented, noting that frost burn can reduce the quality of produce.
Tourists and residents alike marveled at the sight of cars and rooftops shimmering under thin sheets of ice, a rare spectacle in the Philippines. Social media posts from Atok quickly went viral, showing frosted landscapes reminiscent of winter scenes abroad.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) confirmed that the drop in temperature was due to the strong amihan winds, which typically bring colder weather to Northern Luzon from December to February. PAGASA warned that similar conditions may continue in the coming weeks, with Benguet and other Cordillera provinces expected to record even lower temperatures at dawn.
Local officials reminded residents to take precautions against respiratory illnesses, which tend to rise during cold spells. They also advised farmers to use protective coverings for their crops to minimize frost damage.
Despite the risks, the cold weather has boosted tourism in Atok, known for its scenic vegetable terraces and flower farms. Visitors flocked to the town to experience the chill, sip hot coffee, and capture photos of the frost-covered scenery.
